CHAPTER FIVE

Luckily the tape was not back in the apartment, which by now was swarming with police. Berger said it was in a bank safety deposit box in Frankfurt. So the next morning, they hired a new car and began the drive to Frankfurt.

The journey was very uncomfortable for Berger. Decker was virtually ignoring her and all attempts at small talk were rebuffed. So when the car finally arrived at the bank, Berger was happy everything was almost over.

Decker waited outside with a cap and sunglasses on to obscure her features, while Berger went inside for the tape. She could have waited in the car but she didn’t trust Berger not to try and make a run for it. So she stood outside the front door of the bank and tried not to look conspicuous.

Ten minutes later, Berger was back out with a sealed bubble-wrapped envelope. She handed it wordlessly to Decker who ripped open a corner and peered in to see an old-fashioned cassette in its plastic case.

Then before Berger could say anything, Decker wordlessly got back into her hire car and drove off leaving Berger standing outside the bank. As the car headed towards the autobahn for Berlin, Decker phoned Unterwald.

“I’m coming back”.

“That was fast” said Unterwald, “did you find what you were looking for?”.

“Yes”.

“I know that tone of voice and it usually ends with someone being killed or permanently crippled. What is it?”.

“I need a meeting with you and the Chancellor when I get back to Berlin in a few hours. This is extremely important. Trust me, the chancellor is going to want to hear what I have to say”.

“Alright, if you say so” said Unterwald, “can you give me a hint about the subject?”

“Erich Langweiler” said Decker. Before Unterwald could reply, she added “and get an old-fashioned tape deck to play a cassette”. She hung up.
